Unemployment Reaches 2.27 million as Foreign Aid to Zimbabwe Tops £60 million

Yet another £5 million of British taxpayers’ money has been handed out to Zimbabwe - whose president has referred to British people as “crooks and cheats” - as unemployment levels in Britain are projected to rise to a 12-year high of more than 2.27 million.

The £5 million boost brings the “transitional aid” which British taxpayers have given to Zimbabwe this year to a total of £60m.

The “extra” £5 million in aid to Zimbabwe was promised by Gordon Brown after meeting Zimbabwe Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai in London. Mr Brown vowed even more help “if the reform programme on the ground gains momentum” referring to the coalition government headed up by Zimbabwe president Robert Mugabe.

Mr Tsvangirai shocked his liberal supporters in Britain over the past weekend by referring to Mr Mugabe as an important part of the “transitional solution. In fact, he is an indispensable, irreplaceable part of the transition.” His words were widely seen to be an endorsement of Mr Mugabe, who plans to root out all white people from Zimbabwe, and whose reign has seen hundreds of people murdered for daring to oppose him.

The handing over of millions of our tax money is made all the more insulting because Mr Mugabe also openly hates Britain and white British people. Addressing his ruling ZANU-PF supporters at Harare Sport Centre, Mugabe urged black Zimbabweans “to unite against whites. Our party must continue to strike fear in the heart of the white man, our real enemy” (CNN 14 Dec. 2000).
