The pub singer, 34-year-old Simon Ledger, sang the 1970s hit song Kung Fu Fighting in the Driftwood Beach Bar
in Sandown on Isle Of Wight when a man of Chinese origin apparently took offence.
The chart-topping song Kung Fu Fighting was released in 1974, originally sung by Carl Douglas.
The 32-year-old man and his mother are said to have walked past the bar during Ledger’s rendition of Kung Fu Fighting and told police that they were "subjected to racial abuse".
“We hadn't even seen them when we started the song. He must have phoned the police.”
Hampshire Police confirmed that Ledger had been questioned by police on suspicion of racial harassment; however,
they said that the musician would not be charged since there wasn't enough evidence to prove the assault
claims.
A spokesperson for Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said: "Anyone who perceives they are the victim of
a racially aggravated crime is entitled to make a report to the police.
"We will treat such allegations seriously to provide reassurance for victims and to protect the integrity of
appropriate lines of inquiry."
The added spice to this oriental odyssey is that the official police spokesman – oh no sorry "spokesperson" –
has publicly declared that "they will treat such allegations seriously". That is the only criminally
indictable offence of this saga!
