Writing in tonight’s London Evening Standard, the political editor, Joe Murphy, says that “David Cameron is set to announce within days that he will not call a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty if he takes power and it is already law.
“He is expected to sound a retreat on his ‘cast-iron guarantee’ only after the treaty has been ratified by Czech
president Vaclav Klaus, the last European leader to hold out against it,” Mr Murphy wrote.
Mr Cameron’s sharp u-turn flies directly in the face of his strongly worded article published in The Sun newspaper
of 26 September 2007 in which he solemnly vowed that he would hold a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty.
Referring to Gordon Brown’s refusal to hold a referendum, Mr Cameron wrote: “Make no mistake, that’s the reason he refuses to give the British people a referendum on the EU constitutional treaty — he simply doesn’t trust them. It’s the arrogant belief that he — and only he — has the right to decide what’s best for Britain’s future.”
“Since then, we have been keeping up the fight, looking out for the interests of Britain.
“But there’s nothing ‘new’ about breaking your promises to the British public. It’s classic Labour,” Mr Cameron
wrote.
“And it is the cancer that is eating away at trust in politics. Small wonder that so many people don’t believe a
word politicians ever say if they break their promises so casually.
“If you really want to signal you’re a break from the past, Prime Minister, do the right thing — give the people the referendum you promised.
“Today, I will give this cast-iron guarantee: If I become PM a Conservative government will hold a referendum on any EU treaty that emerges from these negotiations. No treaty should be ratified without consulting the British people in a referendum.”
Mr Cameron ended the article with his signature, also reproduced on The Sun’s website.
Now it seems, the wheel has turned full circle and Mr Cameron has become one of the promise breaking cancers in modern politics.
David Cameron or Gordon Brown ... Labour or Tories they're all the same with nothing but contempt and broken
promises towards the voting public
